The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) said, “The last time a human infection with EEE virus was reported in New Hampshire was in 2014. At that time, three human infections were identified, two of which resulted in fatalities.”

The news of these new infections and deaths comes amid heightened concerns that the risk of EEE is increasing across New England.

Officials believe the threat is exacerbated by climate change.

What are the symptoms of Eastern Equine Encephalitis?

Earlier this month in Massachusetts, a man in his 80s was found to be carrying the EEE virus.

State officials have asked the public to voluntarily observe an outdoor curfew, public parks have been closed, and aerial and ground spraying has begun to control the mosquito population.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of Eastern Equine Encephalitis include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, behavioral changes and drowsiness.

The disease can also lead to serious neurological disorders, such as inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.Around 30 percent of those infected die, while many survivors have to cope with permanent physical or mental effects.People under 15 and over 50 are at higher risk.

There is currently no effective vaccine or treatment against the disease.

Health officials recommend using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing outdoors and eliminating stagnant water sources around homes to protect against mosquito bites.
