The Joint Declaration on the Establishment of Strategic Partnership between Azerbaijan and China was adopted at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit of Heads of State held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan on July 3-4, and in paragraph 4.5 of the declaration, Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS. The Chinese side, in turn, expressed its support for Azerbaijan's participation in BRICS.

In the joint statement adopted during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Azerbaijan on August 18-19, it was stated that Russia supports Azerbaijan's participation in BRICS.

WHAT IS BRICS?

Founded in 2006 with the coming together of the names of Brazil, Russia, India and China and initially known as BRIC, the organization was renamed BRICS with the participation of South Africa in 2010.

Since 2009, the organization has become an important geopolitical bloc that coordinates multilateral policies, regularly holding official summits every year. It currently officially has 9 members, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joining.
