At St. Theresa's Eregi Girls' High School, located 374 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, 95 students fell ill. The students were hospitalized due to the disease, the cause of which has not yet been determined.

District education official Bonface Okoth stated in a press release that 95 students' legs were paralyzed due to the disease, rendering most of them unable to walk. Okoth said the students were hospitalized for medical attention.

Following a meeting between school administrators and Ministry of Education officials after the incident, the school was closed indefinitely.

School officials said students would be able to resume school after the cause of the illness was investigated and necessary precautions were taken.

Blood samples were taken from the students to determine the disease, hospital officials said, adding that the blood samples were sent to Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) laboratories.
