“Today it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge,” European Union Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas emphasized.
The Friday meeting, initially intended to kickstart negotiations on a deal concerning Ukraine’s critical minerals, took an unexpected turn as tension escalated. President Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, suggesting he lacked gratitude.
European leaders, however, swiftly expressed their support for Zelenskyy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Zelenskyy’s dignity, acknowledging the courage of the Ukrainian people. “Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace,” von der Leyen affirmed.
Friedrich Merz, the probable future leader of Germany, stressed the importance of not mistaking the aggressor and the victim in the ongoing conflict. French President Macron highlighted the significance of respecting the Ukrainian people’s fight for dignity, independence, and the security of Europe.
Zelenskyy maintained his stance on the inclusion of security guarantees alongside the minerals deal proposed by the White House. He argued that these guarantees were crucial in deterring further aggression by Putin and ensuring lasting peace in the region.
President Trump’s criticism of Zelenskyy’s approach provoked further disagreement. Trump accused Zelenskyy of being disrespectful and risking sparking a potential global conflict. Trump remarked that Zelenskyy had insulted the Oval Office and suggested that Zelenskyy should return only when he was ready to pursue peace.
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the U.S., the President, Congress, and the American people for their continued support in Ukraine’s pursuit of peace and security.
During a subsequent Fox News interview, Zelenskyy reiterated his appreciation for U.S. support but declined to apologize for his actions at the White House. Zelenskyy consistently acknowledged the United States’ assistance, emphasizing the shared values of freedom and justice between the American and Ukrainian people.
According to the Department of Defense, Congress has allocated approximately $183 billion for Ukraine’s defense efforts since February 2022. Trump, however, has disputed this figure, claiming that the U.S. has provided over $300 billion in aid to Ukraine.
