Wimbledon Plans Upgrade for Fans’ Beloved Hill

The iconic grassy slope next to No. 1 Court at Wimbledon is set to undergo renovations in celebration of the grass-court Grand Slam’s upcoming 150th anniversary. Known as a popular gathering spot for fans without tickets to the main stadiums, the hill is a cherished area at the All England Club where spectators watch matches on a large video screen. Referred to as Henman Hill or Murray Mound during notable British player performances, the hill holds a special place in Wimbledon’s history.
The club announced on Thursday that improvements are scheduled to commence after next year’s tournament, with completion expected in time for the 2027 anniversary celebration. Prior to submitting the planning application, the club plans to engage in discussions with local residents next week.
The enhancement project aims to increase wheelchair accessibility, add more seating, and enhance visibility for spectators. The club stated that these upgrades will result in a 20% capacity increase, allowing more guests to enjoy the space. Additionally, the environment surrounding the hill will be upgraded by replacing existing paths with permeable walkways, as well as introducing sun shading and rain cover through a newly constructed pergola.
The hill, historically called Henman Hill during Tim Henman’s tenure and later known as Murray Mound for Andy Murray’s victory in 2013, holds a special place in the hearts of Wimbledon fans.
