“Trump’s Support Plays a Key Role in Johnson’s Budget Victory Strategy”
Congressman Mike Johnson held a meeting at the White House on Tuesday with President Donald Trump and House Republicans who were hesitant to support the Senate-approved budget bill aimed at funding Trump’s priorities, as revealed by a top GOP leadership aide. GOP leaders are once again looking to Trump to help secure the bill’s passage before the House recesses for two weeks. Johnson has committed to advancing the Senate’s amendment to the House budget plan, with a scheduled vote set for Wednesday. However, similar to the initial House budget passage in February, Johnson is facing resistance from some members and is hopeful that the president can sway their votes.
When asked if Trump had influenced any decisions earlier in the day, Johnson responded positively, stating, “I think he did.” Johnson expressed confidence in moving the process forward this week, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling their obligations to the American people. Some GOP members, including Reps. Ralph Norman and Tim Burchett, who are undecided on the bill, did not receive invitations to the meeting with Trump. Rep. Chip Roy, who is firmly against the measure, mentioned that there are sufficient Republican dissenters to defeat it. Despite this, Johnson remains optimistic about gaining the necessary support for the bill. The passage of this legislation in both chambers is crucial to kickstart the budget process, encompassing a significant portion of Trump’s policy agenda.
Johnson also revealed that the White House will offer commitments and assurances to sway reluctant members. Majority Leader Steve Scalise underscored Trump’s pivotal role in advancing the agenda, emphasizing that failing is not an option. Johnson continues to lean on Trump’s support in rallying GOP members behind the budget plan.
