Thrilling Deer Rescue Mission: Brave Efforts to Save Doe and Fawns from Icy Lake

Spring in Wisconsin can still feel like winter, with many lakes frozen well into March or April. Unfortunately, a trio of deer faced a dangerous situation when the ice on a lake gave way beneath them. This heart-stopping event occurred on March 15 at Big Green Lake, a location known for ice rescues. It was a first for the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office to assist in a deer rescue after a concerned passerby alerted them to the stranded animals. Detective Josh Ward and a team of officers, along with drone operators, quickly sprang into action to save the distressed deer family. Despite deviating from standard rescue procedures, their bold and innovative approach proved successful, as captured in footage of the rescue operation. The deer, initially fearful and cold, were safely brought to shore within an hour of the distress call. Detective Ward’s unconventional strategy was necessary given the deep water and icy conditions. By using a drone to guide the deer to safety, the team managed to reunite the doe and fawns on solid ground. While some observers raised concerns about the handling of the deer during the rescue, it was a challenging situation with limited resources. Ultimately, the priority was to ensure the animals’ safety, and thanks to the swift actions of the officers and the alert passerby, the deer family is now safe, dry, and back together.
