Embrace the challenge – even for a team with its share of struggles coming off a 7-10 season following the departure of Mike McCarthy, who had led the team to three consecutive 12-win seasons. “I’m prepared for it, always have been,” said the new coach, Schottenheimer. “I feel more ready for it now than I did when I was 32 and had some opportunities. The biggest thing for me now is that I’m crystal clear about what I want to achieve and how I want to achieve it – building a winning culture with the right people.”
Schottenheimer has found support not just in his vision but also from his fellow coaches, who have been instrumental in his transition. “The other head coaches have been incredible,” said Schottenheimer, who has been involved in the NFL since 1997. “They have reached out to me and served as valuable sounding boards.”
One of those coaches is Eberflus, who rejoined the Cowboys after being let go by the Bears. Schottenheimer leans on him for advice and expects him to lead a defense that excels in creating turnovers. “I have immense respect for him,” said Schottenheimer. “It was a fantastic addition for us, and many were vying for him. We were fortunate to secure him, which is not just beneficial for me as a coach but also as a person.”
Schottenheimer also expressed admiration for his predecessors, McCarthy and Carroll. Despite any challenges, he holds McCarthy in high esteem and considers him one of his best friends in football. Carroll, who had previously released Schottenheimer from his role in Seattle, has had a significant impact on him as well. “Pete has been incredibly influential to me,” said Schottenheimer. “His approach to the game, encouraging individuality, and maintaining passion are qualities I admire. He pushed me to define my beliefs, which was a pivotal moment in my growth as a coach.”
Looking ahead, Schottenheimer aims to follow in the footsteps of coaches like Carroll and McCarthy by securing a Lombardi Trophy for the Cowboys, a feat that eluded his father and the team for almost three decades. A potential championship win could truly transform his life.
