U.S. Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley was taken into custody for misdemeanor battery on Thursday after allegedly hitting a woman with a closed fist at a hotel before the Grand Slam Track event in Miami. The incident occurred as Kerley encountered his ex-girlfriend at the hotel, leading to an aggressive outburst where he threatened violence towards others present. The police report stated that Kerley struck the woman in the face, causing her nose to bleed. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed due to the nature of the incident.
Following his arrest, Kerley, the reigning Olympic bronze medalist in the men’s 100-meter dash, was booked into Broward County jail. Despite being scheduled to compete in the upcoming track event, Kerley will no longer be participating. His attorney expressed confidence that the case would be dismissed swiftly, emphasizing Kerley’s focus on returning to racing and inspiring young athletes.
This arrest comes on the heels of a previous altercation where Kerley was arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer and charged with domestic battery in an unrelated case. The sprinter, known for his success in the 100-meter dash, has pleaded not guilty in both instances. Kerley’s achievements include winning medals at the past two Summer Olympics and claiming the world title in the 100-meter event.
