Police K-9 Slain in Pursuit, Teens Charged – ‘It’s a war out there’!

A police K9 named Bumi was tragically killed in South Carolina during a pursuit, leading to the arrest of three teenagers. The incident occurred on December 23 when deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department were chasing a suspected stolen car. Stop sticks were used to halt the vehicle, causing it to crash.

K9 specialist Alan Ware and Bumi were in pursuit of two suspects, while a third was quickly apprehended. One of the fleeing individuals shot Bumi twice, resulting in the 4-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix being fatally wounded. Despite being rushed to a vet, Bumi did not survive. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

Sheriff Leon Lott expressed his dismay over the lack of respect shown for life, whether human or animal, by the young suspects involved. He emphasized the importance of parental accountability and highlighted the dangers of juveniles being out late at night.

This devastating loss marks the third K9 fatality for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department this year. Sheriff Lott condemned the senseless act, noting the emotional toll it has taken on Deputy Ware and his family. Two suspects have already pleaded guilty, while the third remains in custody facing multiple charges.

The sheriff’s office is committed to seeking justice for Bumi and ensuring the safety of the community, despite the challenges posed by escalating violence.
