A murder investigation has been initiated following the discovery of a retired British couple found dead under disturbing circumstances at their luxurious gîte in southwest France. The bodies of Andrew and Dawn Searle were located at their secluded property in the village of Les Pesquies, situated south of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, during Thursday midday. Neighbors reported finding Mrs. Searle’s naked body outside the house, with signs of head injuries and scattered jewelry. Mr. Searle, aged 62 and previously a counter-fraud specialist, was found hanged inside the house with a gag in his mouth. The couple, who had retired to the region around a decade ago and recently wed, were well-liked members of the local community. They were known for hosting garden parties at their home and renting out the property to vacationers from various parts of Europe.
An initial investigation was conducted by a forensic pathologist from the Montpellier Court of Appeal via helicopter on Friday, with post-mortem examinations scheduled for Monday. No weapons were discovered on the property, and the French authorities have not ruled out any possibilities at this point. Mr. Searle’s previous work investigating financial fraud for Standard Life and Barclays in Edinburgh has led to speculation that he may have been targeted by a disgruntled individual he had helped bring to justice. Despite this, the French police are struggling to comprehend the sequence of events and are hesitant to classify both deaths as murders.
The Mayor of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Jean-Sebastien Orcibal, who officiated the couple’s wedding, expressed shock at the situation due to the low crime rate in the area and the couple’s active social life. The couple’s integration into the local community was well-regarded, with Andrew’s proficiency in French and their friendly interactions with neighbors.
Johan Herault, who knew the couple well through his tour company, described them as lovely individuals, highlighting Dawn’s friendship with his wife and the shock felt by the community at the tragic events.
They resided in close proximity to the mayor. “We had a recent conversation with them over the telephone. I frequently engaged in discussions with Andrew regarding fishing in the local vicinity and our beloved dogs. He had a deep affection for nature,” one resident shared.
“I am aware that he had previously worked in the United Kingdom alongside law enforcement, but this was the extent of my knowledge. Never did he allude to being in any peril. It is perplexing, given that this area is known for its tranquility and serenity,” another villager added.
The community was left in shock by the tragic deaths. A villager recounted, “Just two days prior, they visited the farm to purchase meat. They were delightful, charming individuals. The uncertainty surrounding their demise is distressing. I am fraught with worry and have been unable to sleep all through the night.”
Nicolas Rigot-Muller, the public prosecutor of the region, emphasized that a definitive cause of death for the victims could not be established until the completion of the post-mortem examinations. He stated, “Both individuals met violent ends, however, it is premature to conclude whether these incidents constitute homicides. Every possible scenario is currently under investigation.”
