According to the images shared on X, a large cargo ship hit one of the bridge's columns around 01.30 local time. After the impact, a fire broke out on the ship.
Authorities announced that search and rescue operations are continuing at the scene. Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott said, "Emergency personnel are on the scene and efforts are ongoing."
Maryland Governor Wes Moore's spokesperson Carter Elliott released the following statement;
"My office is in close communication with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski and the Baltimore Fire Department as emergency personnel are on the scene following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
As we continue to assess and respond to this tragedy, we will be in close contact with federal, state, and local agencies conducting rescue efforts.
