Measuring about 4,000 square kilometers, the Antarctic iceberg A23a is about three times the size of New York City.
Once home to a Soviet research station, the iceberg has been largely stranded since it broke off from West Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in 1986, after its base became trapped on the floor of the Weddell Sea.
