Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not take part in the vote to open Ukraine's accession negotiations to the European Union (EU) at the request of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
According to Politico, Orban's objection to the opening of accession talks for Ukraine at the EU Leaders' Summit in Brussels led to a deadlock in the talks.
German Chancellor Scholz invited Orban to leave the room and take a coffee break in front of the other leaders in order to allow a vote on Ukraine's accession.
Scholz reminded that under EU rules, in the absence of one member, the remaining 26 members would have to vote unanimously to open accession negotiations with Ukraine.
