Gunmen have tragically taken the lives of 10 individuals, including children, in an assault on a residence in a central Mexican city grappling with violence linked to cartels, authorities announced on Wednesday. The attack occurred on Tuesday night in Irapuato, Guanajuato state, resulting in multiple injuries as well, as per a statement from the municipal government. President Claudia Sheinbaum described the incident as a “confrontation” and confirmed that an investigation has been initiated without disclosing further details about the event or the victims. The violence occurred during a religious festival being observed by local residents. The state of Guanajuato, renowned for its industry and tourist sites, has unfortunately become Mexico’s most dangerous state due to ongoing gang conflicts, with over 3,000 murders reported last year alone. The region has been plagued by violence stemming from clashes between criminal organizations, particularly the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation cartel. Earlier this year, similar incidents of violence, including mass shootings and discoveries of multiple bodies, have underscored the grim reality of the situation. The cycle of criminal violence in Mexico has led to a significant loss of life and a high number of missing persons, largely attributed to drug-related activities.
