An 18-year-old girl tragically lost her life while kayaking on Lake Grapevine in Texas over the Memorial Day weekend after being struck by a hit-and-run jet ski. Ava Moore was kayaking at the lake, located about 25 miles northwest of Dallas, on the evening of May 25 when a jet ski carrying two women crashed into her, resulting in her death, as reported by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
While one of the jet ski passengers stayed at the scene to speak with first responders, the operator of the jet ski fled with a man before hitting a vehicle while leaving the area. A suspect, identified as Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez, has since been taken into custody in connection with the incident, confirmed the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesperson, Maggie Berger.
The witness, Lisa Scrabeck, shared that Moore was quickly brought ashore after the collision, noting that she was wearing a life jacket that was removed before CPR efforts began. Scrabeck mentioned that Moore did not suffer greatly, offering condolences to her family and expressing the tragic nature of the event.
An investigation is currently underway into both the boat and car incidents, with the Grapevine Police Department handling the car accident and Texas Game Wardens leading the water fatality investigation. Those with information about the suspect or the incident are urged to contact the Grapevine Police Department via email.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Moore’s family with funeral expenses. Described as an exceptional student and athlete, Moore had recently completed her first year at the Air Force Preparatory School in Colorado Springs. The fundraiser has surpassed its initial goal, reflecting the outpouring of support for Moore’s loved ones during this challenging time.
