Deadly floods sweep eastern Australia, leaving four dead and one missing!

Record flooding along Australia’s east coast has resulted in four deaths, with one person still missing.
Approximately 50,000 people have been cut off by floodwaters in the state of New South Wales, following several days of heavy rainfall. The severe weather system has now moved south towards Sydney and the surrounding area.

Since Wednesday, four bodies have been recovered in New South Wales: three individuals who drove into floodwaters and one person who was found on the veranda of their flooded home. The most recent victim, a man in his 70s, was found in a flooded car near Coffs Harbour, after the vehicle veered off the road. A 49-year-old man is also missing after being seen near a flooded road in Nymboida.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Christopher Minns have visited communities affected by the flooding, which is at unprecedented levels. Minns has praised the efforts of the emergency services and volunteers, who have carried out numerous rescues and saved 678 people, including 177 in the last 24 hours.

Although the rain has eased, State Emergency Service Commissioner Mike Wassing has warned that floodwaters could rise as water continues to flow into catchments. Landslides, damaged infrastructure and isolated communities are posing challenges for rescue operations in the region.

Bellingen Shire Council Mayor Steve Allan has noted improvements, with rivers receding and skies clearing, signalling a shift from response to recovery efforts. Despite the ongoing risks, the resilience of the community and the dedication of volunteers have been instrumental in mitigating the impact of the disaster.
