The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has praised fluoride in public water as a significant health achievement that helps prevent tooth decay in all children, regardless of their economic status. After a notable increase in tooth decay rates, Calgary, Alberta has voted to reintroduce fluoride into its water supply.

Following Utah’s ban on fluoride in public water systems, the Florida state legislature has passed a bill to remove fluoride from its water supply. The bill is now awaiting approval from Governor Ron DeSantis. Representative Danny Alvarez, one of the bill’s sponsors, emphasized the importance of individual choice in deciding what goes into one’s body.

Fluoride does not meet the bill’s criteria as a “water quality additive.” While fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that benefits tooth health, consuming excessive amounts can be harmful. Despite concerns, properly fluoridated water and products containing fluoride are generally considered safe.

The removal of fluoride could have potential health and financial implications, as seen in previous cases such as Calgary and Juno, Ala. Studies have shown significant increases in tooth decay rates after fluoride removal in certain areas.

Adding fluoride to water has been recognized as a key public health achievement, reducing tooth decay in both children and adults. However, there are opposing claims about its safety, with some individuals questioning its benefits.

During a cabinet meeting on April 30 with President Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed that fluoride could negatively impact children’s intelligence, as reported by USA Today. In a separate post, Kennedy inaccurately labeled fluoride as “industrial waste.” He wrote, “On Jan. 20, the Trump White House will recommend all U.S. water systems to eliminate fluoride from public water. Fluoride has been linked to arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, decreased IQ, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid issues.” The American Dental Association, among other health organizations, expressed support for community water fluoridation in an official statement, stating that it is effective in preventing tooth decay. Linda J. Edgar, D.D.S., president of the American Dental Association, emphasized the overwhelming scientific evidence in favor of water fluoridation.
