In the early hours of this morning, a chaotic incident unfolded on I-83 southbound in Dauphin County that involved multiple vehicles traveling in the wrong direction. The resulting crash caused a tractor-trailer to swerve off the road to avoid a potential collision with another vehicle.
According to information provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), on the date of December 21, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a total of three vehicles mistakenly entered the southbound lanes of I-83 at Lemoyne, heading north. While one of the vehicles quickly realized the error and managed to turn around, the other two vehicles continued their perilous journey in the wrong direction.
The situation escalated as the two vehicles that were still traveling in the wrong direction eventually collided near the Paxton Street overpass. Subsequently, a tractor-trailer approached the scene and, in a swift maneuver, veered off the road, likely in an attempt to avoid the two errant vehicles, as stated by PennDOT.
As of the current report, no injuries have been reported by the State Police in relation to this incident. Southbound I-83 was closed for traffic until approximately 3 a.m. as authorities worked to assess the situation and clear the roadway.
