Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) official Adamu Abdullahi told reporters that intensive investigations were carried out against Meta for 3 years.

Noting that Facebook and WhatsApp were found to have violated the country's data protection and consumer rights laws "multiple times" in the investigations, Abdullahi said the government fined Meta 220 million dollars.

Abdullahi said the company also gave users in other countries options to decide whether to share their data, but not Nigerians.
