Despite facing the challenges posed by his disability, Matthew has not allowed it to hinder his dreams. Residing in Kent to care for his grandfather full-time, he navigates the demanding responsibilities of caregiving while pursuing his passion for music. “It’s quite hard work, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I have the joy of giving him care and making sure he’s happy,” Matthew shared, reflecting on his dual roles.
Matthew’s musical journey took a serendipitous turn when he encountered The Osmonds, a renowned musical family, who would become instrumental in shaping his future. Longing to play the violin but unable to afford lessons or instruction at school, his encounter with Jimmy Osmond during a performance in Croydon in 2012 proved to be a turning point. Invited onto the band’s tour bus, Matthew shared his story with other members, capturing their hearts with his passion for music.
Five months later, at a charity gala in Leeds, Matthew’s dedication was rewarded when Merrill and Justin Osmond gifted him his very first violin. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter in Matthew’s musical career, allowing him to pursue his dreams with newfound vigor and determination.
In a touching tribute earlier this year, Donny Osmond honored Matthew on BBC’s The One Show with a ‘One Big Thank You’, acknowledging his years of selfless performances for charities and in care homes. For Matthew, playing in these care homes holds a special place in his heart, describing it as the “most rewarding” experience. “I could play in pubs, clubs, festivals – whatever. But you never get the same enjoyment as you do in a care home,” he shared in an interview with BBC Radio Sussex.
