Yankees Star Gerrit Cole Facing Tommy John Surgery!

Gerrit Cole is potentially facing a season-ending and career-changing surgery, as he may need Tommy John surgery. The New York Yankees star pitcher and 2023 AL Cy Young winner has reportedly received a medical recommendation for the procedure, according to The Athletic. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Cole was in Los Angeles to consult with Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Cole encountered elbow discomfort during a recent spring training outing, leading to an MRI and concern about the results. If Tommy John surgery is required, it would be a significant setback for both Cole and the Yankees. The recovery period for this surgery typically ranges from 12 to 18 months, which would likely sideline Cole for the entire 2025 season and raise doubts about his future as an MLB ace.

This news comes as the Yankees already face challenges in their pitching rotation. In addition to Cole’s situation, the team announced that pitcher Luis Gil will be out for at least three months due to a lat strain. With these setbacks, Marcus Stroman is set to secure a starting role, while the Yankees continue to search for another starter to fill the void.

On top of pitching issues, the Yankees are also contending with injuries in their lineup. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with elbow tendinitis and has undergone treatment, while infielder DJ LeMahieu is sidelined with a calf strain.

The Yankees are scheduled to kick off their season at home against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 27.
