In a strange moment during the New York Yankees’ 7-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, reliever Ian Hamilton and rookie Jacob Wilson engaged in a tense stare-down at the end of the top of the seventh inning. With the Yankees behind 4-0, Hamilton gave up a single to Denzel Clarke and walked Lawrence Butler. As Wilson hit a comebacker and Hamilton made an underhand toss to first, the two players locked eyes. The 23-year-old Wilson faced off against the 30-year-old right-hander Hamilton.
Hamilton later explained, “I was having a rough inning. I was feeling emotional, and after making the play, I looked at him and told him to run. He seemed slow out of the box, and I was frustrated with the inning. That’s all it was. He asked me what I said, and I just walked away.”
Wilson, who boasts a .340 batting average, second only to the Yankees’ Aaron Judge at .354, commented, “In baseball, tensions can rise. It’s all part of the game, and there are no hard feelings. As players, we can get frustrated, but ultimately it’s no big deal.”
