Yamamoto The Dodgers’ Rising Star for Opening Day!

TOKYO (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto has experienced the journey of traveling around the world to make his first appearance on the mound in the Major League Baseball season. His initial performance didn’t go as planned, with a rough debut in 2024 against the San Diego Padres in South Korea, where he conceded five runs in just one inning. However, the Japanese right-hander rebounded from that setback and played a vital role in his team’s victory in the World Series against the New York Yankees, capturing the title in five games.

Now heading into his second year, Yamamoto is eager to shine. “This marks my sophomore year, so I no longer consider myself a rookie,” Yamamoto conveyed through an interpreter. “I aspire to enhance my skills and become a significant contributor to the team.”

Yamamoto has emerged as a potential ace for the Dodgers this season and is slated to start on opening day against the Chicago Cubs at the Tokyo Dome. While often in the shadow of his superstar teammate Shohei Ohtani, Yamamoto’s progress is deemed crucial for the Dodgers as he embarks on his second year under a $325 million, 12-year contract signed before the previous season.

Manager Dave Roberts expressed his belief in Yamamoto’s growth, stating, “I see significant maturity in Yoshinobu over the past year. I anticipate a remarkable season from him. His ability to bounce back after a challenging start demonstrates his competitive spirit and character.”

Following his initial setback, Yamamoto showcased impressive performances during the 2024 season, achieving a 7-2 record, a 3.00 ERA, and 105 strikeouts in 90 innings, despite battling a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a considerable portion of the season. Notably, he delivered a strong showing during the World Series, allowing only one run over 6 1/3 innings in a Game 2 victory.

Yamamoto primarily relies on a three-pitch arsenal consisting of a mid-90s fastball, a curveball, and a devastating splitter that induces many swings and misses. Moreover, he has gained confidence in his ability to excel in the Major Leagues, as noted by Roberts: “Confidence plays a significant role, and through experience, he has gained more confidence. This translates into trusting his fastball in the strike zone, enhancing his overall performance.”

With a promising rotation that includes standout pitchers like Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Tony Gonsolin, Roki Sasaki, and the anticipated return of Ohtani, Yamamoto stands out as a key component. As the opening day starter, he is prepared to make the most of this opportunity, especially with the historic matchup against Cubs lefty Shota Imanaga, marking the first all-Japanese starting pitcher duel in MLB history.

As he gears up for the new season, Yamamoto’s focus is on the present moment, leaving the past challenges behind. “In terms of preparation, not
