WW2 Artifact Cache Discovered in Children’s Playground

Brimstone Site Investigation, a bomb disposal company, made a startling find at a children’s playground. On the first day of excavation, they uncovered 65 10-pound practice bombs and smoke cartridges. The following day, an additional 90 practice bombs were retrieved. These explosives were confirmed to be relics from World War II.

The local parish council revealed that a total of 174 devices had been located thus far, emphasizing the necessity of locating and removing all ordnance before the playground can be deemed safe for use. Although classified as practice bombs, these devices still pose a risk due to their explosive potential. Therefore, professionals are required to ensure the safety of the area for both construction workers and future playground visitors, as stated by the council.

According to statements from Mark Mather, a prominent local politician, historical records indicate that the site was utilized for training the Home Guard volunteer army during the war. It is believed that post-war, the unexploded ordnance was buried on the premises. To guarantee the complete elimination of any remaining threats, further excavations are planned before new equipment can be installed in the playground.

The urgency of handling such hazardous materials was exemplified in a recent incident in Plymouth, England, where thousands of residents were evacuated due to the discovery of a 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) unexploded bomb in a residential garden. Authorities opted to relocate the bomb for disposal at sea to avert the potential risk of damage to nearby properties if detonated on-site.

This alarming discovery in the children’s playground is a stark reminder of the ongoing presence of unexploded ordnance in England. The diligent efforts of disposal experts and local authorities are crucial in ensuring the safety of communities and preventing potential harm from these remnants of wartime conflict.
