Audrey Jean “Good” Backeberg went missing in 1962 from Reedsburg, Wisconsin. She was 20 years old at the time and was reported missing after hitchhiking to the state capital with another person who claimed she then took a Greyhound bus to Indianapolis, Indiana. After walking away from the bus stop, she was not seen or heard from again.
Despite efforts by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office to find her over the years, the case went cold. Recently, Detective Isaac Hanson revisited the case and was able to uncover new information with the help of Ancestry.com. Through this resource, he located an out-of-state address belonging to Backeberg and made contact with her after many years.
After a 45-minute conversation with Backeberg, Hanson learned that she had her reasons for leaving and seemed content with her decision. The sheriff’s office determined that her disappearance was voluntary and not the result of any criminal activity. Backeberg expressed no regrets and appeared to have moved on from her past.
