Woman Arrested in Mexico for Murder of Cal Fire Captain

Authorities in Mexico have apprehended a woman suspected of fatally stabbing her wife, a Cal Fire captain, at their residence in Southern California. Yolanda Marodi, also known as Yolanda Olejniczak, was taken into custody on Saturday at a hotel in Baja California, Mexico, according to a statement from the Baja California Citizen Security Secretariat (SSCBC). She was subsequently transferred to the U.S.-Mexico border with the assistance of Mexico’s National Institute of Migration.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Mexican authorities had located and detained Yolanda Marodi in Mexico before handing her over to U.S. Marshals, who escorted her to a U.S. Port of Entry. She is now facing murder charges and is undergoing processing before being booked into custody.

Yolanda Marodi, 53, is suspected of fatally stabbing her wife, Rebecca Marodi, 49, a captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, at their San Diego County home on February 17. After the incident, Yolanda Marodi was observed crossing into Mexico through the San Ysidro Port of Entry in her vehicle, as confirmed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Following her capture on Saturday in Mexico, Yolanda Marodi’s whereabouts had been unknown for over a month. The investigation into Rebecca Marodi’s death is ongoing, with the sheriff’s department’s homicide investigators working to uncover more details regarding the circumstances and motives surrounding the tragic event.

He was 49 years old. Details of a fatal stabbing were revealed in court documents obtained by USA TODAY. The documents showed that Rebecca Marodi was caught on a Ring doorbell camera desperately running and screaming, “I don’t want to die.” The footage, taken on the property’s patio, captured Yolanda Marodi responding, “You should have thought about that before,” as stated in an arrest affidavit filed in San Diego County Superior Court. Yolanda Marodi was seen in the video with blood on her arms and holding a knife. Subsequently, she was observed packing luggage into a silver SUV and driving away from the scene. Court records indicated that Yolanda Marodi later confessed to hurting Rebecca in a text message to an acquaintance. It was also revealed in court records that Yolanda Marodi had previously served time in prison for another domestic-related stabbing death. In 2003, she pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of her then-husband Joseph Olejniczak, according to court records in San Bernardino County. Yolanda Marodi served time in prison from 2004 to 2013.
