Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed concerns over remarks made by President Donald Trump’s top border adviser, suggesting that he could be arrested for guidance he provided to state employees regarding interactions with federal immigration agents. Evers stated in a video posted on YouTube that he is not afraid and will continue to do what he believes is right. The guidance issued by Evers’ administration advises state workers to contact an attorney if approached by ICE agents, not to hand over documents or grant access to computers without consulting the agency’s attorney, and not to answer questions from the agents.
Critics, mostly Republicans, interpreted the guidance as an order not to cooperate with ICE, an accusation Evers strongly refuted. He clarified that the goal was to provide clear instructions to state employees to ensure compliance with the law. Trump’s adviser, Tom Homan, hinted at possible actions regarding the guidance, emphasizing that harboring illegal aliens is a felony. Some Republicans welcomed the idea of Evers being arrested, with one state representative even posting a fake image on social media depicting Trump arresting Evers.
These developments unfolded following the arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan on charges related to allegedly aiding a man in evading immigration authorities.
