Winter’s Wrath! New Year’s storm to spread snow and rain across Midwest to Northeast!

A storm moving from the northern Plains towards the Midwest and Northeast early this week will bring snow and rain, impacting travel and outdoor events in New York City. The storm will move across the north-central United States from Monday to Tuesday, with light snow expected in areas from Montana to Iowa, accumulating 1-3 inches. Moderate snow, up to 6 inches, may fall near Omaha, Nebraska. Rain is forecast for St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh, with a chance of snow mixing in along the Interstate 70 corridor. Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit will experience rain and wet snow on Tuesday. In the Northeast, rain is expected from Tuesday to Wednesday, affecting the Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic, and New England coasts.

Heavy rain is forecast for midtown Manhattan on New Year’s Eve, with showers continuing into New Year’s Day. Temperatures will be around 50 F at midnight, but it may feel colder due to the wind. Cold air on the back side of the storm will bring snow to parts of the central and northern Appalachians, with higher elevations expecting accumulations of 1-6 inches.

Portions of Interstates 70, 80, 84, and 89 may become snow-covered and slippery. Lake-effect snow is anticipated in parts of northern Michigan and regions near Lake Ontario in New York. The air will progressively turn colder following the storm on New Year’s Day.

In the Midwest and Northeast, a weather pattern is developing that is expected to bring some of the coldest air seen in years to parts of the Central and Southern states. Accompanying these frigid temperatures, storms featuring snow and ice are likely to continue as each new surge of cold air moves through the region up to the middle of the current month.
