Will Smith Seeks Guidance from Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar for New Album
Will Smith recently shared insights he gained from conversations with Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar prior to working on his latest album, Based on a True Story. The actor and rapper, aged 56, disclosed during a recent interview on Sway in the Morning that he consulted the two music icons for advice before venturing back into the music scene.
“I made two calls before starting,” Smith revealed. “I reached out to Jay and Kendrick, seeking guidance on my return to music.” He recounted Jay-Z advising him, “Authenticity is key. Don’t fabricate your narrative.”
Smith further mentioned that Jay-Z’s words served as inspiration for the album’s title. Regarding Kendrick Lamar, Smith shared that the rapper urged him to address topics he had hesitated to discuss previously. “Essentially, it’s the same message: Be truthful. It was a daunting prospect,” the Men in Black star added. “Stay true to your genre. Craft the album that speaks to you, not what you think will appeal to others.”
Prior to the album’s release on March 28, Smith expressed his anticipation for sharing new music with his audience. The project marks his first full-length album since 2005’s Lost and Found, featuring collaborations with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor, and Jac Ross.
Smith’s album features the track “Beautiful Scars,” a collaboration with Big Sean featuring Obanga, with initial songs addressing the controversial 2022 Oscars incident where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage in response to a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The incident led to Smith’s ban from the awards show for a decade.
Smith’s musical comeback has been met with enthusiasm, with fans eagerly anticipating the release of Based on a True Story and appreciating the honesty and vulnerability he brings to his music.
“He is Black,” Smith raps in the second song titled “You Lookin’ for Me?” where he confidently asserts, “Took a lot, I’m back on top/ Y’all gon’ have to get used to it/ Won’t stop, my music remains hot/ Even though I may not receive nominations.” Smith’s album, Based on a True Story, is now available.
