In the film “Sinners,” by Warner Bros., actors Jayme Lawson, Wunmi Mosaku, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, and Li Jun Li have a surprising connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sev Ohanian, the producer of Ryan Coogler’s popular 2025 vampire drama, disclosed that the movie utilized unused costumes from Marvel’s Blade film, a reboot of the original trilogy starring Wesley Snipes and set to feature Mahershala Ali.
Ohanian revealed in an interview with ScreenCrush that costume designer Ruth Carter, who had been working on the Blade movie, repurposed the period-appropriate attire she had prepared for that project when dressing the cast of “Sinners.” The film, set during the Great Depression in 1932 and starring Michael B. Jordan, benefited from Carter’s collection of outfits, which Marvel allowed them to purchase.
Although the Blade costumes were primarily worn by background actors in “Sinners,” Ohanian clarified that they were not tailored for the main cast. Carter had previously worked on the Blade project, which was a 1920s vampire story halted due to various strikes, and she saw an opportunity to apply her research to the costumes for “Sinners” after hearing Coogler’s vision for the film.
Coogler described the challenges of shooting the juke joint sequence in “Sinners,” where numerous extras costumed by Carter were involved. The IMAX filming presented difficulties, requiring the scene to be shot in sections due to the limitations imposed by the film reel.
Despite the setbacks faced by the Blade film, Marvel announced its development in 2019, leading to continued anticipation and speculation surrounding the project’s future.
