Voluntary Recall Issued for Popular Canned Tuna Products by Major Retailers

A voluntary recall has been issued for certain canned tuna products that are sold nationwide at well-known retailers such as Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Costco. The recall is due to a defect in the pull tab mechanism on the cans, which could potentially result in botulism food poisoning, a serious and potentially fatal condition. Tri-Union Seafoods, the company behind brands like Genova, Van Camp’s, Trader Joe’s, and H-E-B, announced the voluntary recall in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The decision to recall the products was made as a precautionary measure after the supplier identified a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull lid of specific batches of canned tuna. This defect has the potential to compromise the seal of the product, leading to leakage or contamination with clostridium botulinum, a dangerous bacterium that causes botulism, a severe illness affecting the nervous system.

Symptoms of botulism include difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, and paralysis, and in extreme cases, it can be fatal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasize the seriousness of botulism and recommend immediate medical attention for anyone who suspects they may have been affected.

Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled products, even if they appear or smell normal. The affected products were distributed under various labels in different regions, including H-E-B in Texas, Trader Joe’s in multiple states, and Genova and Van Camp’s in select locations. The company has published a list of specific can codes and expiration dates impacted by the recall.

As of now, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled tuna products. However, individuals experiencing any adverse symptoms after consuming the products are urged to seek medical help promptly. Customers in possession of the recalled cans can return them to the retailer for a full refund, dispose of them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement item.

It is important to note that this recall only affects specific canned tuna products from Tri-Union Seafoods and not their entire product line. The company emphasizes its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality in its products.
