“Mistakenly Deported Man from Maryland to Return to the United States”
A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the return of a Maryland man who was wrongfully deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador. Kilmar Abrego Garcia was expelled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last month, despite an immigration judge’s ruling in 2019 that had protected him from deportation to El Salvador, where he faced potential persecution by local gangs.
Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, has not been able to communicate with him since he was sent back to El Salvador and imprisoned. She has been vocal in urging for his immediate return, emphasizing the pain and suffering experienced by families in similar situations.
The case will now be taken to a courtroom in Greenbelt, Maryland, as efforts continue to reunite the couple. The White House has labeled Abrego Garcia as a member of the MS-13 gang, a claim that his attorneys deny, pointing out the lack of evidence to support the allegation.
Abrego Garcia, who had legal permission to work in the U.S., had fled El Salvador due to threats from local gangs. Despite being granted protection by an immigration judge in 2019, he was mistakenly deported last month, sparking outrage and concerns about the treatment of noncitizens with legal status in the country. His wife and children are anxiously awaiting his safe return, with Vasquez Sura expressing her deep longing to hear her husband’s voice again.
