US Diplomat Blasts China & Hong Kong for Curbing Freedoms!

Hong Kong’s top American diplomat expressed concerns on Thursday about the restrictions on freedoms imposed by the Chinese and Hong Kong governments. U.S. Consul General Gregory May, speaking at a reception for the U.S. Independence Day, criticized the policies that have eroded freedom in the city, particularly citing the case of jailed activist Jimmy Lai and what he referred to as “transnational regression.”

May, who will soon move to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing after a three-year term in Hong Kong, emphasized his admiration for the city and its people. However, he highlighted the negative impact of mainland Chinese and Hong Kong government policies on freedom in Hong Kong.

Following the 2019 anti-government protests, Beijing implemented a national security law in Hong Kong to maintain stability. This law led to the prosecution of Lai and other activists, drawing concern from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed interest in Lai’s case.

May also criticized attempts by Hong Kong authorities to enforce the national security law on U.S. individuals, referring to accusations against overseas-based activists. The Hong Kong government, in response, accused May of neglecting the rule of law and criticized his comments as misleading and aimed at smearing the national security law.

The U.S. Consulate had previously condemned the Hong Kong government for allegedly suppressing 4th of July celebrations, prompting a response from the city’s education bureau. The bureau defended its caution against attending events organized by American diplomats, citing the need to uphold national security.

May expressed disappointment over the situation, considering it perplexing. The ongoing legal proceedings and tensions between the U.S. and Hong Kong over issues of freedom and security demonstrate the challenges faced by both sides.
