In the state of Telangana, authorities are in a race against time to save eight construction workers trapped deep within a tunnel for over 72 hours.
The tunnel, stretching 43km in Nagarkurnool district, experienced a roof collapse early on Saturday morning while approximately 50 workers were inside.
Luckily, 43 workers escaped unharmed, but efforts to rescue the remaining eight have been hampered by loose soil, mud, and slush within the tunnel.
Contact with the trapped men has not been established, hindering the provision of essential supplies like oxygen.
State minister Jupally Krishna Rao expressed slim hopes for the survival of the trapped workers, given the challenging circumstances.
An expert team of “rat-hole miners,” experienced in navigating narrow tunnels, has been deployed to clear debris and reach the workers. This team notably saved 41 workers from a similar situation in Uttarakhand in 2023.
Approximately 33km of excavation has been completed, with 10km left to go, as of Tuesday.
Rescue operations involve using a train to access a crucial point for debris removal via a conveyor belt. Additional efforts such as continuous water pumping aim to maintain oxygen levels within the tunnel, although the rugged terrain is impeding progress.
While the rescue continues, families of the trapped workers, many of whom are daily wage earners, anxiously await updates on their loved ones.
Some express frustration towards authorities for endangering their family members, questioning decisions that led to the risky project.
The incident occurred at the under-construction Srisailam Left Bank Canal, part of a major irrigation project by the Telangana government, with a slab collapse causing injuries to at least a dozen workers.
Situated in a hilly forest area within the Nagarjuna Sagar-Srisailam tiger reserve, the tunnel construction had only resumed four days before the accident following a three-year hiatus.
Various relief teams, including the National Disaster Response Force, firefighters, and Indian army soldiers, are on-site to assist.
Firefighters were the first to venture inside the tunnel on Sunday, covering a significant distance before encountering obstacles that halted their progress.
Facing challenges like mounds of mud and inadequate equipment, the rescuers were compelled to retreat temporarily, unable to proceed beyond the blockage.
