LEXINGTON, Ky. — Florida basketball started the season with an impressive 13-0 record, relying on a straightforward strategy. With the strongest rebounding team in the nation, the Gators capitalized on their dominance on the boards to ignite their offense. They averaged nearly 20 points per game in transition, ranking second nationally as of last Saturday. Despite maintaining their rebounding advantage against Kentucky in a game that began before noon that day, Florida couldn’t secure the win on the court.
The Wildcats emerged victorious, outscoring the Gators 106-100 at Rupp Arena in both teams’ SEC opener. Kentucky effectively stifled Florida’s fast-break opportunities, limiting them to a mere three points in transition. The Wildcats’ offensive prowess, shooting an impressive 57.8% from the field, played a significant role in securing the win. This shooting performance was the best any team had managed against Florida so far this season.
Kentucky’s success was also evident from their efficiency beyond the arc, converting nearly half of their 3-point attempts at a 48% rate. Koby Brea stood out with his exceptional shooting, sinking seven of his nine attempted 3-pointers and contributing 23 points off the bench. Teammates Andrew Carr and Jaxson Robinson also made valuable contributions from long range, each hitting two 3-pointers.
The victory over Florida marked an important milestone for Kentucky’s first-year head coach, Mark Pope, in his inaugural SEC matchup. The Wildcats improved to a 12-2 overall record, with this win being a significant achievement in the early stages of the season.
The defeat handed to Florida, who entered the game with a 13-0 record, marked their first loss of the season. This loss ended the Gators’ impressive start, which had been the second-best in the program’s history, trailing only behind the 17-0 beginning in the 2005-06 season, culminating in a national championship.
The Wildcats’ ability to limit Florida’s transition play and maintain offensive pressure throughout the game played a crucial role in securing the win. Kentucky’s performance not only showcased their offensive efficiency but also highlighted their defensive capabilities, forcing the Gators to frequently inbound the ball following made baskets.
Looking ahead, Kentucky is set to face Georgia in their first SEC road contest of the season. The Wildcats will travel to Athens on Tuesday, continuing their conference campaign with momentum from their recent victory over Florida.
