Editor’s note: Troy Vincent, the Executive Vice President of Football Operations at the National Football League, penned the following article for USA TODAY. Jackie Robinson stands as the ultimate American hero, transcending not only the realm of athletes but also that of all Americans. A standout four-sport athlete with exemplary academic achievements, he served our country with great honor during WWII. This deeply resonates with me, as my grandfather Jefferson Vincent, who raised me, similarly served during that tumultuous time of segregation, even within the military. In our household, Jackie embodied the pinnacle of athleticism, service, dedication, courage, and perseverance. He valiantly confronted the hatred and prejudice of the Jim Crow era, single-handedly breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, a feat unimaginable at a time when Black Americans were prohibited from playing professionally.
We all draw from wells we did not dig, and we are all beneficiaries of Jackie’s legacy. He is the giant upon whose shoulders we stand, his impact immortalized in history. His unwavering resolve inspired the Civil Rights Movement, challenging societal norms with grace and dignity. He exemplified the limitless potential of human spirit and possibility.
Jackie’s legacy extends far beyond the baseball diamond. His success in corporate America, including ownership of Black banks and support for underserved families, mirrors his triumphs on the field. His post-baseball endeavors paved the way for future generations, motivating individuals like myself to take up the mantle in advancing civil rights, promoting diversity, and fostering equal opportunities.
Following in Robinson’s footsteps, I have dedicated my career to combating bias, fostering trust, and championing diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Like Jackie and Rachel Robinson, my wife Tommi and I have committed ourselves to serving the community through our Love Thy Neighbor Community Development and Opportunity Corporation, striving to empower individuals through education, leadership development, and access to essential resources.
Jackie Robinson’s legacy as a devoted Christian, loving husband, war veteran, exceptional athlete, astute businessman, and unwavering champion of justice continues to inspire generations. He remains a beacon of light, hope, and integrity, setting a timeless example of how to live a life of purpose and impact.
