Unveiling the Threat L.A. Air Unsafe to Breathe! Discover How to Stay Safe

Rapidly spreading wildfires have ravaged Los Angeles since Tuesday, Jan. 7, causing tens of thousands of residents to urgently seek safety from the approaching flames and thick smoke. With the fires still uncontained, the resulting smoke is posing a significant health threat to people in nearby areas. A downtown Los Angeles air monitor recorded an alarmingly high level of fine particulate pollution at 483.7 micrograms per cubic meter, far exceeding the federal daily average limit of 35 micrograms, as reported by the LA Times.

According to the World Health Organization, health issues related to air pollution contribute to millions of deaths annually. In 2019, approximately 4.2 million deaths were linked to fine particulate matter (PM), which comprises minuscule toxic particles such as nitrates, sulfates, ammonia, sodium chloride, mineral dust, and black carbon. These particles can infiltrate the lungs and bloodstream, causing harm to the body and weakening the immune system, making individuals more vulnerable to other health problems.

To safeguard yourself from the hazardous air quality, follow these tips:

– Check your air filters regularly: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises inspecting filters daily during a wildfire outbreak to prevent them from getting clogged with particulate matter. Replace the filter when it turns dark brown or grey or emits a smoky odor.

– Wear protective masks: Dr. Suzanne Paulson, a UCLA professor specializing in atmospheric sciences, recommends staying indoors during high smoke levels. If going outside is necessary, opt for N95 respirators, which effectively shield against smoke and ash particles.

– Minimize indoor air pollution: Keep windows closed and refrain from activities that can worsen indoor air quality, such as burning candles, using gas appliances, smoking, or vacuuming. Using portable air purifiers can help maintain cleaner indoor air.

– Shield yourself from ash: Wear protective clothing, including gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, closed shoes, and goggles, to safeguard against ash irritation to the eyes and skin.

By following these precautions, you can better protect yourself during the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.
