BEIJING (AP) — A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck western China near Nepal on Tuesday, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals. This seismic event stands out as one of the deadliest in recent memory within the nation.
Frequent seismic activity in China predominantly occurs along the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas. The collision of the India and Eurasia tectonic plates in this region results in substantial uplifts, which have the potential to significantly alter the elevations of the Himalayan mountain peaks.
Notably, in May 2008, Sichuan province in the southwestern part of China experienced a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake that resulted in the deaths of nearly 90,000 people.
