The Italian restaurant chain Bertucci’s has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the third time since 2018, with the most recent filing occurring in late April. Known for its brick oven pizza and pasta, the Massachusetts-based business has closed seven underperforming locations, including five in Massachusetts, one in Rhode Island, and one in Maryland.
Founded in 1981 by Italian immigrant Joseph Crugnale, Bertucci’s quickly gained recognition, with USA Today ranking it as one of America’s top 10 pizza restaurants by 1989. Despite its initial success, the chain faced challenges over the years, leading to the recent bankruptcy filings.
The company stated that the current bankruptcy filing is intended to allow for a “breathing spell” to evaluate the best path forward and develop a reorganizational plan. The impact of losses, high inflationary pressures, and industry challenges played a significant role in the decision to seek bankruptcy protection.
After previous bankruptcy filings in 2018 and 2022, Bertucci’s has streamlined operations to 15 locations, including spots in Boston, Chelmsford, Chestnut Hill, and others. The company continues to face financial pressures as it navigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving economic conditions.
