A combination of chance and resilient building design allowed these select houses to withstand the ferocious flames that decimated thousands of homes, claiming the lives of at least 24 individuals.
The contrasting scenes were striking: Atop a hill, a solitary home stood amidst scorched trees and shrubs, its interior belongings visible through unblemished windows. Below, the remnants of neighboring residences lay in disarray—singed roofs, collapsed fences, charred walls, twisted air conditioning units, and abandoned swings. Notably, the iconic Walsh House from the television series “Beverly Hills 90210” emerged unscathed, its immaculate lawn untouched, while next door, a neighbor’s dwelling lay shrouded in black soot.
Certain beachfront properties also escaped unscathed, their pristine facades stark against a backdrop of singed trees. Yet, others succumbed to the flames, with collapsing roofs and trees piercing through once-cozy interiors, leaving emergency responders to navigate the debris-laden landscape. Amidst this destruction, David Slater diligently swept the driveway of his unharmed abode, mere feet away from his neighbor’s incinerated vehicle and a crumbling wall. Even behind Slater’s gate, fallen trees and scattered debris bore witness to the fierce onslaught of the wildfires.
