Unlock Your Meteorologist Dream Today!

This week’s inquiry is from Morning Brief subscriber Maddie Stehling, who is aspiring to become a meteorologist. She asks, “What steps can I take now to prepare for a career in meteorology, and which schools are the best for this field?”

Intern Miriam Guthrie responds, “Hello Maddie! I am currently working as a meteorology intern on the content team. I recently completed my bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at Georgia Tech in May. Following my internship, I plan to pursue my master’s degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science at the same institution.

My interest in weather began at an early age when I experienced the impact of severe weather firsthand, which instilled fear in me. However, studying meteorology helped me overcome this fear. Passion for weather is crucial in this field. Whether you are in middle school or high school, I recommend focusing on math and science courses to prepare for the right educational path. During challenging moments in your studies, remembering your passion will keep you motivated.

There are several reputable schools for meteorology. Some of my colleagues attended Florida State University, known for its expertise in tropical meteorology. Other notable institutions include the University of Georgia, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Mississippi State University, and Penn State University. Oklahoma is also renowned for its focus on severe weather and tornado research.

I chose Georgia Tech due to its strong emphasis on math and science, which aligned with my career aspirations. It’s important to ensure that the school you choose meets the 1340 requirements if you plan to work for government agencies like the National Weather Service and NOAA. These requirements are also valued by most other meteorology employers.

My experience at the Weather Channel has been rewarding. Educating people about weather is fulfilling, especially during events like Hurricane Erick. The job is exciting and dynamic, offering a unique blend of chaos and enjoyment.”
