Get ready to enjoy some celestial wonders in the night sky this mid-April! From the Lyrid Meteor Shower to sightings of Venus, Hydra, and Leo, there’s plenty to see. Here’s a week-long guide to what’s happening in the night sky from April 14 to April 21.
Monday: Mars and Jupiter will be visible in the Western sky around sunset, remaining visible throughout the month.
Tuesday: Keep an eye out for Venus, the brightest planet in our solar system, reaching peak brightness in the early mornings this week.
Wednesday: Look for the constellations Leo and Hydra, with Hydra being exclusive to the Northern Hemisphere in the winter into spring.
Thursday: The Lyrid Meteor Shower will start to pick up, with its peak expected on the night of April 21 into the early morning of April 22. It’s a good idea to start observing early Thursday morning before sunrise.
Weekend: Saturn will be visible in the eastern sky before sunrise, around the same time as Venus but lower in the sky.
Weather Outlook for the Week:
A couple of frontal systems are expected in the Midwest and East, one early in the week and another later on. In the Southwest, a low-pressure system may bring showers and thunderstorms, spreading to parts of the Plains by the Easter weekend.
