New Study Reveals Omega-3 Supplement Slows Aging Process

A recent study has uncovered promising results indicating that taking a daily omega-3 supplement could potentially slow down the aging process. Researchers examined data from 777 participants aged 70 and above in the DO-HEALTH trial and found a correlation between consuming 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids each day and a deceleration of biological aging. The study investigated the impact of three simple interventions—omega-3, vitamin D, and exercise—on the most reliable indicators of biological age, known as epigenetic clocks.

Biological age is determined using epigenetic clocks, which detect chemical changes in genetic material to assess patterns and measure aging. Bischoff-Ferrari explains that individuals can have a biological age that differs from their chronological age, indicating varying rates of aging. By examining four epigenetic clocks, the researchers in this study obtained a range of measurements to assess the impact of the interventions.

The study revealed that individuals taking a daily omega-3 supplement for three years exhibited a biological age approximately three months younger than their chronological age, as indicated by three of the four epigenetic clocks. Combining omega-3 with vitamin D and exercise showed even more beneficial effects, suggesting the potential for a comprehensive anti-aging approach.

While the exact mechanism behind the anti-aging effects of omega-3 remains unclear, researchers propose several theories. These findings build on previous clinical observations from the DO-HEALTH trial and highlight the potential benefits of omega-3 supplementation in promoting healthy aging.

According to Bischoff-Ferrari, omega-3 has been shown to reduce the rate of falls by 10% and lower the risk of infections by up to 13%. When combined with vitamin D and exercise, the trio decreased the likelihood of pre-frailty by 39% and invasive cancer by 61%. This combination seems to offer a powerful shield against aging. Vitamin D is known for its ability to inhibit uncontrolled cell growth and reduce inflammation, while exercise is a key factor in promoting healthy aging and protecting against various age-related diseases.

This study highlights the impact of minor lifestyle adjustments, such as incorporating supplements or starting a new exercise routine, in safeguarding our health and slowing down the aging process of our cells.
