Univ of Virginia President Resigns Amid Trump Admin Inquiry into Diversity!

University of Virginia President Jim Ryan announced his resignation during a memorial service in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2022. The decision came after pressure from the Trump administration to step down amidst a Justice Department investigation into the university’s diversity practices.

James E. Ryan informed his senior leadership of his decision to resign during a meeting on Friday, as reported by a source present at the UVA Board of Visitors session. The Justice Department had insisted on Ryan’s resignation to address concerns regarding the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as first reported by The New York Times.

In a letter to the university community, Ryan expressed his heavy heart as he shared his resignation as President of the University of Virginia. He explained that while he is committed to advocating for his beliefs, he could not unilaterally challenge the federal government to protect his own position. Such a move, he reasoned, would be impractical and self-serving, potentially jeopardizing the livelihoods of employees, researchers, and students.

The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors had previously decided to disband the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office following an order from the Trump administration to halt diversity programs or face funding repercussions. Governor Glenn Youngkin supported this action, emphasizing the school’s dedication to equality and opportunity.

However, the Justice Department accused the university of failing to fully dismantle DEI, prompting a warning letter on June 17 urging swift action, according to reports. Both the DOJ and the University of Virginia did not immediately comment on the matter.

Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine condemned the Trump administration’s interference in UVA’s leadership decisions, emphasizing that the university’s governance should lie with the Board of Visitors. They praised Ryan’s leadership and contributions to the university, stressing the importance of a strong higher education system for Virginia’s future.

The UVA Board of Visitors accepted Ryan’s resignation, marking the end of his tenure as the university’s ninth president since 2018.
