An Omaha real estate agent had a surprise visitor recently – a hungry opossum decided to feast on an entire tuxedo chocolate mousse cake she had bought from Costco. Kim Doggett discovered the scene on her back porch: the cake demolished, paw prints on her new couch, and a panting opossum sprawled on top of it. The opossum was taken to Nebraska Wildlife Rehab on February 10, prompting an outpouring of support from fans for the viral “Cake Bandit.”
The wildlife rescue service shared the story on Facebook, with one person saying, “We’ve all been there, girl.” Another commenter related, “I get it gurl. I have also found myself breathless after finishing a whole cake on my own, maybe not Costco, but it’s happened more than once.”
The “Cake Bandit” is now under the care of Nebraska Wildlife Rehab. The incident unfolded when Doggett asked her son to take her homemade peanut butter balls outside to the deck due to a full fridge. Discovering the opossum on the deck, they attempted to shoo it away but failed. Concerned about the chocolate’s impact, Doggett contacted the American Humane Society for assistance.
Fortunately, devouring the cake likely saved the opossum’s life, as it led to the discovery of unrelated lead toxicity. The rehab facility has even created T-shirts featuring the opossum’s face and rehab story to celebrate the sweet scandal. The animal is expected to fully recover and be released back into the wild in the coming weeks.
