Unexpected Discovery in Ancient Chinese Tomb!

Ancient Chinese Tomb Mural from 8th Century Depicts Blonde Man

A 2018 project to reconstruct a hillside road in Shanxi Province’s capital led to the discovery of an ancient tomb. However, archaeologists did not widely report on the find until recently. Long Zhen, director of the Jinyang Ancient City Research Institute of the Taiyuan Cultural Relics Protection Research Institute, revealed that the tomb features pairs of painted figures on both sides of the entrance door. The murals inside depict various scenes of daily life during the Tang dynasty, such as women grinding flour, men making pasta, and other domestic activities.

Experts believe the tomb belonged to a man who died in 736 AD at the age of 63 during the Tang dynasty. His burial site also contained the remains of his wife. The tomb’s paintings, done in the popular “figures under the tree” style of the time, provide a unique glimpse into the daily routines and responsibilities of people during that era.

Among the figures depicted in the tomb, all of whom appeared to be of the Han ethnicity, one stands out—a figure with blond hair and a beard. This figure, identified as a “Westerner,” is believed to represent someone from Central Asia, likely a Sogdian from modern-day Tajikistan or Uzbekistan, based on his appearance and attire.

The murals cover the entire tomb, showcasing scenes of daily life and symbolic imagery. The style of the artwork is reminiscent of other Tang-era murals, characterized by strong outlines, simple shading, and two-dimensional compositions. The tomb’s decorations extend beyond the walls to include the gates, corridor, and tomb pedestal adorned with intricate designs.

In addition to the vibrant depictions of daily activities, the tomb features symbolic figures like guardians, horses, and ceremonial objects. The detailed paintings offer a rare glimpse into the lives of the tomb’s occupants and provide valuable insights into Tang-era culture and customs.

The arrival of a Westerner brings a touch of intrigue to the conventional lifestyle of the elderly man and woman who have long passed away.
