Unexpected Arrival: Baby born on a subway

The train came to a stop at the 34th Street-Herald Square station, right beneath the famous Macy’s department store. A few commuters stepped up to assist the woman during her delivery, with one individual even stepping in to cut the umbilical cord using a pocket knife, as per Brown’s account.

“Based on what we knew, she wasn’t a doctor or anything like that; she was simply someone who knew exactly what to do in such a critical situation,” Brown shared with ABC News. “We are extremely grateful for her swift actions.”

A video, recorded by Brown, depicted the woman lying on the floor post giving birth, while another passenger carefully held up the newborn and wrapped her in a red cloth.

The train conductor held the train at the station and made their way to the specific car, joined by a NYC Transit Train service supervisor and officers from the NYPD, as confirmed by the MTA. Emergency medical services promptly arrived at the scene and safely transported both the mother and the baby to Bellevue Hospital, where they were reported to be in good condition by officials.

Bryanna Brown, a fellow passenger who documented the birth, expressed how heartening it was to witness New Yorkers unite to aid the woman in need. “It was truly a remarkable sight,” she told WABC.

The baby’s name has not been disclosed yet, but Brown described the event as a “miracle” unfolding on 34th Street, reminiscent of the beloved 1947 film.

MTA New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow, in a statement, commended the collective effort of New Yorkers in assisting each other, showcasing the true spirit of unity within the subway community and the city at large.

“We are overjoyed that both the mother and Baby W are doing well, and eagerly anticipate their future rides with us, hopefully less eventful,” said Crichlow.

While giving birth in the NYC subway system is rare, it has been known to occur occasionally. In 2017, an MTA worker aided a mother in delivering her baby on a subway platform, and in 2012, a baby boy was born on a J train in downtown Manhattan.
