Archaeologists recently uncovered a Roman statue head in Rome, shedding new light on the Late Antique period from the fourth to sixth centuries A.D. The head was found within the foundation of the Basilica of Saint Stephen, near the Tombe di Via Latina. Originally used as construction material for the church, the carved stone head, depicting a bearded male figure, is now undergoing restoration at Italy’s Central Institute for Restoration in Matera. The experts hope that through the restoration process, they can uncover more information about the statue’s origins, age, and significance, providing valuable insights into the cultural dynamics of the Late Antique period in Rome.
