Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have yet to be claimed at a New Mexico medical examiner’s office more than a month after their passing. The couple was discovered deceased in their Santa Fe residence on February 26 and remain on the unclaimed decedents list maintained by the New Mexico Medical Examiner’s office as of recent reports. Although it is not uncommon for bodies to remain unclaimed for a period of time, officials suggest that Hackman’s family may still be arranging funeral services. Despite a strained relationship in the past, Hackman had reconciled with his three children—Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie—prior to his passing. Following their father’s death, the children expressed their grief in a statement, remembering him not only as a famous actor but also as a beloved father and grandfather. Surprisingly, none of the children were named in Hackman’s will, which reportedly leaves his $80 million estate to Betsy, his second wife, who is not their mother. The circumstances of the inheritance and the couple’s passing, believed to be due to a rare rodent-borne disease and heart issues, respectively, have left many questions unanswered.
